This faction is made up of younger, more ambitious warriors and Jarls who chafe under the traditional, often defensive stance of some of the older Dominion leaders. They believe that the harsh environment has forged them into a superior people and advocate for more aggressive exploration and raiding of the lands beyond the Dominion's current borders, seeking new resources, wealth, and glory. They often clash with more isolationist factions and may disregard the authority of older Jarls who preach caution and the preservation of existing territories.

Location

Stretching across the rugged, windswept far northern latitudes of Eurasia, the Náströnd Dominion is a land of dramatic contrasts. Towering, snow-capped mountains plunge into icy fjords, their slopes often scarred by veins of dark Stygium. Glacial valleys carve through the interior, leading to hardy tundra and sparse coniferous forests. The surrounding seas are frequently choked with ice floes, and the long winters bring relentless blizzards and extended darkness, contrasting with the stark beauty of the landscape under the midnight sun of the short summers. Frequent Collapses batter this northern location. Geothermal activity is common, creating pockets of warmth and steam vents across the frigid terrain.

Society & Governance

The most prevalent phenotypes within the Náströnd Dominion are Arkuda and Volpin, their thick fur and hardy constitutions well-suited to the harsh climate. A notable population of Avis, resembling hardy seabirds and birds of prey, are also present and are often skilled seafarers and scouts.

The people of the Náströnd Dominion are fiercely independent, deeply valuing strength, resilience, and self-sufficiency. Their culture is rooted in ancient sagas, a strong connection to the sea, and a profound respect for the unforgiving power of nature. They maintain a rich oral tradition filled with tales of powerful ice giants, cunning sea serpents, and brave heroes who battled the elements and monstrous creatures. They also have a unique spiritual connection to the land and the sea, often conducting rituals to appease the powerful spirits they believe inhabit their domain. Governance is decentralized, with numerous hereditary Jarls (chieftains) ruling their respective territories and settlements based on their strength, wisdom, and ability to provide. Annually, a "Great Thing," an assembly of all Jarls and prominent figures, is held near a significant geothermal vent known as the "Hearthfire" to discuss common defense, trade, and the interpretation of ancient laws.

Naming

Old Norse and Nordic resonance. Surnames often use patronymics or clan forms: -sen, -dottir, of Skallheim.

Given names: Eirik, Solveig, Alvar, Runa, Hilda, Fenja, Joran, Leif

Surnames: Bjornsson, Halvik, Ström, Arnesen, Ulfdahl

Capital - Hrimfaxi

Hrimfaxi is the primary mobile settlement and de facto capital of the Náströnd Dominion. Composed of heavily armored Ark Units adapted for polar operation, the convoy traverses the Dominion’s northern territories, maintaining continuous mobility to avoid most severe Collapse activity.

The Ark Units’ exteriors are reinforced with specialized thermal plating and etched with traditional runic insignia believed to confer protection. Central governance occurs within the Hall of Antlers, located in the lead Ark Unit, where the annual Great Thing—the Dominion’s assembly of Jarls and regional leaders—convenes to deliberate on law and policy. Hrimfaxi’s combination of mobility, durability, and cultural symbolism positions it as the Dominion’s enduring seat of authority.

Technology

To survive the harsh climate, the people of Náströnd have developed sophisticated insulation techniques using animal hides and locally sourced materials. They also harness geothermal energy, supplemented by smaller, robust Stygium reactors, to heat their dwellings and power their specialized vehicles. Renowned shipbuilders, they have adapted their Landships into "Ice-Runners" with reinforced hulls and specialized treads or runners, enabling them to traverse both icy waters and frozen land, vital for travel and resource gathering.

While Stygium Arts are not as widespread as in some other nations, those with an affinity often focus on elemental manipulation related to ice, snow, and fierce winds, sometimes using intricately carved wooden Evokers adorned with bone, amber, and the teeth of formidable arctic creatures. Runes, believed to hold protective and empowering properties, are frequently carved into their ships, weapons, and even the foundations of their homes.

Military

The military strength of the Náströnd Dominion lies in their hardy and fiercely loyal warriors, skilled in close combat with axes, spears, and sturdy shields. They are also proficient with powerful crossbows designed for accuracy in harsh weather and for taking down large, resilient prey. Their Ice-Runner Landships are often equipped with ballistae and, increasingly, experimental Stygium-powered harpoon cannons designed to pierce the thick hides of monstrous arctic fauna and potentially disable enemy vessels. Elite warriors, known as the "Frost-Bitten," are said to possess incredible endurance and a near-unbreakable will, able to fight through debilitating injuries.

Stygiosis

In the unforgiving Náströnd Dominion, survival hinges on unwavering strength, making any sign of weakness a threat to the community's precarious existence. Consequently, the emergence of Metastatic Stygium Conversion Syndrome is met with swift and decisive action. Initial reactions to visible symptoms are marked by profound fear and immediate ostracism. The Jarls and populace view Stygiosis not merely as personal misfortune but as a potential contagion and a drain on scarce resources within their already struggling settlements. This practicality dictates prioritizing resources for the healthy and capable, deeming long-term care for the incurably ill an unsustainable burden.

As a result, the common practice across the Náströnd Dominion is the often brutal exile of individuals displaying clear signs of Stygiosis. Those with early symptoms are typically forced out of settlements with minimal or no supplies, left to face the harsh wilderness alone. Facing the brutal elements and the constant threat of monstrous arctic fauna, these exiled individuals often gravitate towards each other out of desperate necessity. Isolated and weakened by their condition, their chances of individual survival are slim, but by forming small, desperate groups, they find a modicum of protection, shared warmth, and the potential to pool their meager resources.

Minor Factions

Frostflower Fellowship

This clandestine group operates in the shadows, advocating for the rights and humane treatment of individuals afflicted with Metastatic Stygium Conversion Syndrome. Recognizing the harsh reality of exile within the Dominion, they attempt to provide aid to those cast out, offering shelter in hidden locations within Nomad Cities, sharing meager resources, and documenting the injustices they face. They believe that even those touched by Stygiosis deserve compassion and that their exile weakens the community by discarding individuals who might still possess knowledge or skills.

Northern Reavers

This faction is made up of younger, more ambitious warriors and Jarls who chafe under the traditional, often defensive stance of some of the older Dominion leaders. They believe that the harsh environment has forged them into a superior people and advocate for more aggressive exploration and raiding of the lands beyond the Dominion's current borders, seeking new resources, wealth, and glory. They often clash with more isolationist factions and may disregard the authority of older Jarls who preach caution and the preservation of existing territories.
