Mixed-purity Stygium sample.

The occurrence of a Collapse is marked by the rapid growth of Stygium, a crystalline mineral that dramatically increases the danger of affected areas. While its precise appearance varies, Stygium typically forms as sharp shards. In its purest form, it resembles obsidian, while lower purity crystals tend to be translucent.

This unique mineral acts as a conduit for magical energy. It is not known how exactly Stygium enables magic, but it can be utilized in various ways, including as a power source, and to create Evokers, tools which allow users to use a form of magecraft—which is known as Stygium Arts—without being otherwise affected by the mineral. Due to the volatility of the crystals when pulverized, Stygium can also be processed into explosives in lieu of gunpowder.

Prolonged exposure to unrefined Stygium carries the significant risk of contracting Metastatic Stygium Conversion Syndrome (MSCS), an illness characterized by the growth of Stygium crystals within the body.
