Location

The Rheinland Federation is situated across the vast, fertile plains surrounding the major river systems of the ancient Rhine and its tributaries. This region, while not immune to Collapses, experiences them with slightly less intensity than the mountainous regions further to the south, though lingering Stygium fields and powerful winds still pose significant threats. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, open fields, and vital waterways that have historically served as crucial trade routes.

The social fabric of the Rheinland Federation is heavily influenced by its history as a hub for trade and commerce. A strong emphasis is placed on established guilds and merchant houses, which wield significant economic and social influence. While there is a central parliament, elected from representatives of these guilds and major cities, these organizations often operate with considerable autonomy. Practical skills related to trade, logistics, and resource management are highly valued, and social mobility often depends on success within these established structures. There is a strong sense of regional identity within the Federation, with individual city-states and trade leagues maintaining distinct traditions and customs.

The population of the Rheinland Federation is a diverse mix of phenotypes.  While they value competence and contribution, there is a strong emphasis on established family and guild affiliations. They pride themselves on their pragmatism, their strong work ethic, and their ability to adapt to the challenges of Ziemia through cooperation and efficient organization.

Capital - Neu-Rhein

Neu-Rhein is the administrative and economic capital of the Rheinland Federation. Designed as a modular Nomad City, it comprises multiple Ark Units capable of independent detachment and reassembly, reflecting the Federation’s emphasis on efficiency and adaptability.

At its center stands the Bundesturm, a multi-tiered Ark Unit that functions as both the federal parliament and the primary trade hub of the Federation. Surrounding sectors contain densely organized habitation decks, manufacturing zones, and extensive warehousing facilities connected by tram networks and automated freight corridors. Neu-Rhein operates as the primary node in the Federation’s logistical infrastructure, coordinating trade routes, communications, and legislative activity across its constituent city-states.

Technology

The Rheinland Federation is renowned for its mastery of transportation and logistics Technology. Their engineers have developed highly efficient and robust tracked vehicles, including some of the largest and most reliable Landships in Eurasia. They also excel in establishing and maintaining communication networks, utilizing a combination of advanced radio relay stations and heavily protected wired lines that crisscross their territory and connect them to other major powers. Their understanding of hydroponics and resource management within Nomad Cities is also considered top-tier, allowing them to sustain large populations even during extended periods of mobility.

Military

The Rheinland Federation's military strength lies in its heavily armored and well-maintained ground vehicle fleets. Their Landships are particularly renowned for their cargo capacity and defensive capabilities, often acting as mobile fortresses protecting vital trade routes and resource convoys. While they possess Stygium firearms, their military doctrine emphasizes coordinated vehicle movements, robust defenses, and the strategic use of specialized crossbow units with advanced targeting systems. They also have a notable contingent of Mages specializing in defensive Stygium Arts, focusing on creating powerful force fields and reinforcing structures.

Stygiosis

In the Rheinland Federation, the initial prognosis for individuals with Metastatic Stygium Conversion Syndrome is somewhat more optimistic compared to many other societies. Their pragmatic nature promotes a degree of integration, particularly in the early stages of the illness. The Federation values the skills and contributions of its citizens, and those exhibiting minimal symptoms are often able to continue participating in society. This initial acceptance reflects their practical approach to resource management and their focus on the collective productivity of their communities.

However, as Stygiosis progresses and more visible and debilitating symptoms manifest, the Federation's tolerance shifts. Increased restrictions are placed on affected individuals, ultimately leading to their confinement within segregated MSCS wards in their Nomad Cities. Despite the initial pragmatism, the visible signs of the condition continue to fuel significant social stigma and widespread discrimination throughout the Rheinland Federation, highlighting the persistent fear and misunderstanding surrounding the illness.

Minor Factions

Free Cities Alliance

A political bloc formed by representatives from several of the more autonomous city-states within the Rheinland Federation. While their members are often affiliated with various guilds, their primary goal is to protect and expand the rights and privileges of the individual cities against the central parliament. They advocate for greater local control over resources, taxation, and law enforcement, often forming a significant opposition force within the Federation's political landscape and representing the diverse regional identities within the nation.

Bauhaus Logistics

A notable minor faction within the Rheinland Federation is Bauhaus Logistics, a highly efficient and well-regarded transportation and freight company that operates extensively throughout the Federation's territory and beyond. Known for their distinctive, modular tracked vehicles and their rigorous adherence to schedules, Bauhaus Logistics specializes in the secure and timely delivery of goods, resources, and personnel between Nomad Cities and smaller settlements. While not wielding political power directly, their influence is significant due to their crucial role in maintaining the flow of commerce and supplies that underpins the Rheinland Federation's economy, making them a vital, if often unseen, cog in the nation's logistical machine.
