Location

Sprawling across the sun-drenched peninsulas and scattered islands of former Italy and Greece, the Omphalos Theocracy clings to a landscape where ancient ruins emerge from fertile valleys and rugged coastlines. The azure Mediterranean, though still beautiful, now faces unpredictable currents and storm-driven waves from distant Collapses. Veins of Stygium crisscross the rocky hills, forming crystalline outcroppings along the shores, marking the land's exposure to these events. While the surrounding sea may buffer the immediate impact of the most severe Collapses, the region still endures intense electrical storms, temperature fluctuations, and powerful winds that make sea travel treacherous.

Society & Governance

The people of the Omphalos Theocracy are predominantly Avis, exhibiting a wide variety of bird-like features. A significant population of Caprin also inhabits the mountainous regions, known for their surefootedness and resilience.

Governance in the Omphalos Theocracy is deeply rooted in their unique religious beliefs. They venerate the Omphalos, their mythical origin point located within a massive Stygium formation in what was once Delphi. This formation is revered as the world's literal center, the source of all life and a divine conduit. The nation is ruled by the Oracles, a council of high priests and priestesses chosen through rigorous spiritual trials, believed to possess a heightened connection to the Omphalos and its Stygian energies. The current head of the Oracles is the High Oracle, Giorgios Phalensis, who holds significant spiritual and secular authority.

The culture of the Omphalos Theocracy is steeped in ritual and reverence for the Omphalos. The Oracles' pronouncements often guide daily life. Flight is considered sacred, and elaborate aerial dances and ceremonies are common. They utilize intricate communication systems with trained messenger birds, and their architecture often features high, open structures to accommodate winged travel. Annual pilgrimages to the Omphalos, which is surrounded by a sprawling complex of crystalline structures and ancient ruins miraculously preserved and expanded over centuries, are central to their faith.

Capital - Delphi

Delphi serves as the permanent capital and religious epicenter of the Omphalos Theocracy. Built atop ancient Greek ruins, it encompasses the monumental crystalline formation known as the Omphalos, revered as the nation’s spiritual and physical origin point.

The city’s layout radiates outward from this Stygium spire, integrating open sanctuaries, elevated platforms, and ceremonial flight corridors designed for its predominantly Avis population. Delphi remains stationary, functioning as both a sacred site and administrative center, while surrounding Ark fleets maintain mobility for defense and supply. It is the location of the Council of Oracles and the seat of the High Oracle, consolidating theological and political authority in one location.

Technology

Technologically, the Omphalos Theocracy prioritizes advancements that align with their cultural and religious values. They skillfully utilize Stygium for intricate energy conduits and have developed sophisticated wind power systems, often incorporating avian-inspired designs in their turbines. Their understanding of Stygium Arts is deeply intertwined with their faith, with many Oracles and followers practicing divination, healing, and manipulating air currents. They have also developed unique bio-engineering techniques, particularly in selectively breeding messenger birds for enhanced speed, endurance, and even limited Stygium-enhanced communication.

Military

The military, known as the "Aerie Guard," is primarily composed of Avis who leverage their flight for scouting, rapid deployment, and aerial combat. They are armed with lightweight but effective melee weapons, specialized crossbows for capturing or disabling opponents, and some wield Evokers to manipulate wind and lightning—seen as manifestations of the Omphalos’ power. While aerial dominance is key, they also maintain swift, maneuverable vessels for coastal defense and island transport. Many Caprin serve as elite mountain troops, skilled in guerilla warfare and defending their rugged territories.

Stygiosis

Within the Omphalos Theocracy, Stygium holds a deeply sacred status, believed to be intrinsically connected to the Omphalos, their central religious artifact. As such, its extraction and utilization are meticulously controlled by the Oracles, with a primary focus on applications that serve the spiritual and communal well-being of their society. This reverence dictates a careful and deliberate approach to the powerful mineral, ensuring its use aligns with their theological doctrines and societal necessities.

Thus, Stygiosis is viewed with a complex blend of fear and reverence within the Theocracy. While the illness is undoubtedly feared for its debilitating effects, it is also sometimes interpreted as a divine intervention or a unique connection to the sacred Stygium. Consequently, individuals afflicted with MSCS are typically segregated from the general populace, but those who develop Stygium Arts as a result of the condition are of particular interest to the Oracles, who closely monitor them and may attempt to guide or control their abilities in accordance with the Theocracy's religious beliefs and practices.

Minor Factions

The Purified Flame

This radical sect believes the current Oracles have become corrupt and have strayed from the true, fiery essence of the Omphalos' power. They advocate for a return to what they perceive as more ancient and rigorous rituals, sometimes engaging in acts of subtle sabotage or defiance against the Oracles' established practices, believing they are the true interpreters of the Omphalos' will.

League of Free Thought

Composed of individuals from various backgrounds within the Theocracy, this faction secretly promotes secular ideals and questions the Oracles' absolute authority over all aspects of life. They circulate forbidden texts and engage in hushed discussions about alternative forms of governance, focusing on individual freedoms and a separation of spiritual and secular power, posing a fundamental challenge to the Theocratic structure of the current government.
